Advances in Fiberglass Entry Door Construction

  • Nov 2, 2009

I would like to talk about a new kind of material for our homes.  Progress in the field of construction means householders who are renovating face an explosion in number of decisions. One of the most important decisions may be the type of front door to put in. Here we will talk about the fiberglass entry door.  The forward entry way to a house is vital in presenting the mood and appearance, and should be compatible with the rest of the building.

Luckily, the modern homeowner has nearly an unlimited number of choices in the kind of front door. One of these concern the building material for the door, of which there are three basic kinds : steel, wood and fiberglass. The first, steel doors, is a great choice for security and protection against moisture or heat. They also are hardy to warpage even if climate proves humid, and are hard to batter down. However, steel doors become scratched with ease, and have the unfortunate quality of transmitting cold. On a hot day, the steel door can get hot to the touch. On a cold day, indoor warmth can be conducted and lost to the exterior via the steel door. The second type is a wood door. Not surprisingly, a door made of wood slowly will show a lot of use, from scuff marks to cracks. The severe rays of sunlight also hold all the wavelengths of light that break down cellulosic chemical bonds.  Superficial damage can be repaired by sanding, replacement and refinishing, but structuralmajor damage like warpage because of extreme moisture content in the air is not so easy to fix. Homeowners concerned about these issues may instead opt for a fiberglass door.  While there is no argument that wood yields a traditional appearance, these days the appearance of wood can be replicated with fiberglass placed through high technological manufacturing methods.

The definition of fiberglass is clear from the name: thin filaments of glass tied together, bonded by resin, and amalgamated to create myriad shapes. Glass is a see-through, hard material made of noncrystalline silicon-oxygen molecules that switch between soft and hard phases at high and low temperatures respectively. The extruding into thin fibers means that it can be manipulated and shaped into any structure desired. To promote join the glass fibers, plastic resins is doped in.  Even though generation of very thin glass filaments is an old skill, only recently have companies thought to produce composite materials by joining glass with plastic polymers. The final "fiberglass" is a robust material that resists compression and extension, which are properties of glass and plastics only individually.

All this means picking a fiberglass entry way is not easy, as the facile nature of fiberglass results in a tremendous number of choices in styles. For those concerned about energy ratings, fiberglass has the same or better insulating properties as wood. They can be customized in looks akin to wood, and can be crafted in a way to resemble it. A change in the way front doors are hung up has also co-occurred with the invention of fiberglass doors. The previous method of renovating a door was to simply remove the old one and installing the new one, while paying little attention to how the jamb or threshhold or sidelights were or were not appropriate for the replacement door.  However, recent time has found a rise in "entry systems". The whole exterior frame of the door, threshhold-interface, and weather stripping, tied together by hinges and locksets, are packaged with the entry system.  Since the door gets to the destination as a complete package, the issue of heat conduction and radiation through the door can be reduced tremendously by the manufacturer through consistency in manufacturing methods.  Choosing fiberglass entry doors means picking price in addition to long-life and attractiveness.  A famous company for such doors is Thermatru.

Understanding the nature of fiberglass entry doors helps the homeowner highly in selecting the fitting door.
